Samsung’s next Galaxy Z Flip is expected to feature a 120Hz display
Samsung’s next Galaxy Z Flip device could have a 120Hz display, bringing it into line with the company’s flagship range. After it emerged earlier this week that the ‘Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 2’ has been postponed, in part, at least, to distance itself from the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy S21 launch, giving both product lines more exposure.
According to a post on Weibo from renowned Samsung leaker Ice Universe, the wait could well be worth it, with a 120Hz display seemingly in the pipeline. There had been some disappointment when the original Samsung Galaxy Z Flip launched alongside the Samsung Galaxy S20 that the 120Hz display in the main flagship line hadn’t been included on clamshell-foldable which has a display clocking in at a mere 60Hz.
Given the mixed reviews it got, despite its brand new form factor, it could well be that Samsung has decided to take its time and get the second version right. Actually, did we say the second version? According to the same leaker, it will actually be called the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 – with the 5G variant of the original being counted as the 2nd. It’s not dissimilar to Microsoft’s decision to skip Windows 9, to create some distance between people’s associations of a not-so-successful predecessor.
There’s not a lot else we know for sure, but we can probably deduce that the Flip3 will have 5G by default, and that probably means that it won’t be dramatically cheaper than the original, another reason not to let it share a keynote with the Galaxy S21 range. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is likely to be on par price-wise and it may muddy the waters as to which is the flagship. Whereas the first Galaxy Z Flip was essentially a mass-produced proof of concept, sometimes at the expense of its specifications, the second (oh, alright, third) seems to be heading into the luxury tier, with its own identity and update cycle.
